Borlamouth Exhaust on LS1 Trans Am: XR-1 Muffler
Currently I have true duals on my 2002 LS1 Trans Am. I had a shop fab up a custom true dual catback for my Fbody, if you're not familiar with the Fbodies, they are made for only sporting a y-pipe style exhaust. Before I had the SLP loudmouth, after a while that became annoying due to the rasp and popping. So I went to true duals for a throatier and less raspy exhaust.
Well bad news about the true dual setup I have, the flanges on the header are all rusted out and the gaskets are leaking like a siv. I could just replace the gaskets, but the exhaust pipes are pretty rusted as well. It's only been three or four years since I put the exhaust on, I guess that's what happens when you don't go with stainless steel pipes. So let that be a lesson for you guys, make sure you get stainless steel when it comes to a catback exhaust.
So what am I going to do now? Well, I've been looking through all the exhaust systems for the Fbody. I don't like any of them, the Magnaflow is too quiet, the SLP loudmouth is of course too raspy like I said, and GMMG is way to quiet for my ears. A lot of LS1 fans rant and rave on LS1tech about the GMMG exhaust, but really, it doesn't impress me much. There are a few others out there, but I didn't like them very much either. I listened to most of them on Ls1Sounds.com.
Finally I stumbled across the Borlamouth exhaust, it's not a real manufactured exhaust, it's more of a custom fabbed up exhaust. Basically you buy a SLP loudmouth catback and instead of using the loudmouth resonator, you use a Borla XR-1 muffler. The results are shocking, the exhaust sounds pretty dam sweet. Perfect growl tone without any rasp and popping. It's by far the best dam exhaust I've heard on the LS1 Fbody. And the cool thing is, most Fbodies probably won't have this exhaust. So if you're like the rest of the automotive crowd who like to be different, you might want to opt for this exhaust. Personally I'm not doing it to be different, I'm doing it because I think it sounds the best out of all the crappy sounding aftermarket LS1 exhausts out there.
Down below is a great video of what the custom Borlamouth exhaust sounds like, exactly like I said, deep growl without any rasp. The Camaro in the video has long tube headers, off road y-pipe, and the borlamouth catback. By the way, I never mentioned if I had headers or not, I do, they are by Kooks. So the Borlamouth will sure sound sweet on my LS1 Trans Am.
Here's a picture of what the Borlamouth setup looks like, if you purchase the setup you will be suing the SLP loudmouth pipes, they are stainless steel so they won't rust out like the regular aluminum exhaust, for instance what happened with my true duals. The SLP polished tips look sharp, go great with chrome wheels if you have them on your fbody.
Short video of what the Borlamouth exhaust sounds like, top notch!
